In this Chat Box Session, Katelyn and Harlene shows us how to take their career to the next level using concrete examples and practical applications from their personal stories in order to successfully lead through change, solve problems and seize opportunities in an increasingly complex and connected world.
FACILITATORS
Katelyn Choe, Consul General U.S. Consulate Auckland
Katelyn Choe has been a career diplomat with the U.S. State Department for 20 years. Her previous tours include South Korea, The Netherlands, Afghanistan, Nepal, and Washington D.C. Her most recent assignment was as the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics Coordinator. During the Winter Olympics, Katelyn worked closely with the Foreign Commercial Service and U.S. companies and corporate sponsors to promote U.S. economic interests and growth. She also organized various cultural exchange programs with Team USA Olympians and local schools to increase dialogue and cultural understanding using universal passion for sports as a way to transcend linguistic and sociocultural differences and bring people together.
Katelyn received her Masters Degree in Economic and Political Development from Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs. She is married to a publisher who can do his job and stay happy as long as there is reliable internet and bike paths. She has two children and three rescue dogs but wishes she could have more (dogs, that is).
Professor Harlene Hayne, Vice-Chancellor, The University of Otago
Professor Harlene Hayne received a BA from Colorado College, and an MSc and PhD in Behavioural Neuroscience from Rutgers University. She was a postdoctoral fellow at Princeton University prior to coming the Psychology Department at the University of Otago in 1992. In 2011, she was appointed to the position of Vice-Chancellor, having previously been the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Enterprise) and Head of the Psychology Department.
As Vice-Chancellor she continues to maintain an active research programme. She has had continuous extramural funding for her research since 1992. Her primary area of expertise is memory development. To date she has published over 150 book chapters and journal articles and has supervised 28 PhD, 40 Masters and more than 50 Undergraduate Honours theses. She is the Associate Editor of Psychological Science in the Public Interest, Memory, the Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, and the New Zealand Journal of Psychology and is a member of the Editorial Board of Infant Behaviour and Development and of Developmental Psychobiology.
Professor Hayne is a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand and of the Association for Psychological Science. In 2009 she was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to scientific and medical research and in 2012 she was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from Colorado College, USA. She is a former member of the Board of Treasury and is the current Chair of Fulbright New Zealand and of the Universities New Zealand Research Committee.

Throughout her career, she has made a contribution to the intellectual discourse on the internationalisation of higher education through research, publications and presentations at major conferences and forums. Dawn has worked in the international offices of RMIT University, La Trobe University, and Macquarie University and for not for profit organisations - The Institute for Study Abroad, Butler University (IFSA-Butler) and the International Student Exchange Programs (ISEP).
